An Okie Girl’s take on French Hot Chocolate ((in a jar))

An Okie Girl’s take on French Hot Chocolate ((in a jar))

A few days ago, I was hurriedly whipping up one of my favorite chocolate cake recipes “the BEST Chocolate Cake“, out of my grandma’s Betty Crocker cookbook when I came across a page of recipes that flipped a light bulb on in my little food loving brain.

Here is what I saw:

For some reason, before this moment, it had never occurred to me that there were different types of hot chocolate for different countries. Are you laughing at me right now? Am I the only one who never realized this fantastic truth?!

I did a little research and learned pretty much every country has it’s own take on this yummy drink. Who knew??!! ((and why didn’t you tell me??!!)) Well, there are many interesting variations – and of course, a few similarities…like chocolate, haha.

And now that a world of hot chocolate has been opened – guess what I couldn’t wait to do?? Well, at the first sign of a snow day, I whipped up a batch of international hot chocolate. I was inspired by Betty’s French Hot Chocolate recipe, but added a few extras.

Here is a short list of ingredients:

image

  • 8 oz 72% cacao dark chocolate, chopped

image

  • 1 c whole milk, hot
  • ½ c whipping cream, hot
  • 1½ c boiling water
  • 3 T granulated cane sugar
  • 3 T powdered sugar
  • 2 t light corn syrup
  • 1 T corn starch
  • 2 t vanilla
  • a pinch of sea salt
  • marshmallows

image

Combine all ingredients ((except marshmallows)) in a large Mason jar, seal & shake.

image

Keep shaking!

image

And shake a little more, until all of the chocolate has melted into the hot liquid.

image

Doesn’t this look promising??

image

The corn starch worked to slightly thicken the hot chocolate while the vanilla & super dark chocolate make this taste like no hot chocolate I have ever known. Slightly bitter, extra chocolaty, rich & creamy with that perfect hint of vanilla. YUM-YUM!! So very decadently delicious.

image

The kids were kind to let me take a few more photos of our yummy creation – but finally, they could wait no longer!

image

Although the photos may say otherwise, Gracie & Shep didn’t love the bitter chocolate – but Kade & Brod were begging for a refill!

image

But not before momma got a taste!

image

Next time ((which will be tomorrow!!)) I am going to try this same recipe with milk chocolate in place of the double dark. I wonder what country I am copying?? Maybe – Switzerland ((eek)).
